Settlers Pitch Real Estate to US Jews

Israeli settlers have found a creative way to circumvent the ever dwindling monetary contributions offered by the government to finance the building of homes in settlements: American Jews.  According to this article, published in today’s Maariv, leaders of the settler movement have taken their campaign abroad to the affluent, ideological, and often right-wing Orthodox Jews of the East Coast. Houses are offered for purchase, and the new owners are encouraged to rent the homes to settlers who wish to populate the area, but who cannot afford a mortgage.  It should be emphasized that the houses are built in certified “legal” areas.

I’m ambivalent about this idea considering that contributions of $120-250,000 from the Diaspora, instead of furthering the messianic ideology of a very small group of Israelis, could be directed to far more worthy causes.  One in three Israeli children lives in poverty; Holocaust survivors cannot afford both their medication and food…  I’m not against the population, and even expansion, of settlements.  But this project should be far from a philanthropic priority for the “blessed” Jews of the Diaspora.
